Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy is one of the most common neurological disorder that leads to motor disability, and mostly hit children. It is nothing but a group of crucial disorders that hinders the mobility of a person. The affected person will suffer serious imbalance and posture issues.

You will be amazed to know that, according to CDC’s ADDM network, almost 1 in 323 kids are been identified with CP. This ratio is kind of raising alarm for all of us and this is why this blog intends to give all essential info about cerebral palsy we should be aware of.

One of the main cerebral palsy causes includes abnormality or disruption in brain development, especially before childbirth.

As we have already told you about what is cerebral palsy, let us know about other important factors;

1.    Cerebral Palsy Types

There are 3 main types of cerebral palsy, i.e.,
  • Spastic cerebral palsy- identified but stiffness in muscles of at least one limb.
  • Athetoid cerebral palsy- identified by involuntary movement.
  • Ataxic cerebral palsy- Identified by issues in coordinated movement.

2.    Cerebral Palsy Symptoms to look for
  • Variations in muscle tone (too stiff or too floppy)
  • Spasticity- Stiff muscles and exaggerated reflexes
  • Rigidity- Stiff muscles with normal reflexes
  • Ataxia- Lack of muscle coordination
  • Athetosis- Slow, writhing movements
  • Favoring one side of the body more than the other
  • Excessive drooling

  • The difficulty with swallowing, sucking or eating
  • Seizures
  • Speech difficulty

In cerebral palsy, the signals get lost or redirected while traveling from the brain to the body. This, in turn, results in difficulty in mobility.

Brain abnormalities associated with cerebral palsy can trouble in following ways-
  • Hearing issues.
  • Difficulty with vision
  • Intellectual disabilities
  • Abnormal touch or pain perceptions
  • Oral diseases
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Mental health (psychiatric) conditions

3.    Cerebral Palsy Treatment
  • Botox injections- it relives the muscle stiffness. Tendon lengthenings is also done for some patients.
  • Orthopedic procedures- Serial casting is a common orthopedic procedure that is done to maintain proper mobility.
  • Various therapies- It can include occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, etc depending upon patient’s symptoms.
